Tablet PC

As one new tablet PC announcement after another surfaces these days, you may be asking yourself, "What does a tablet give me that I don't already get out of my computer or smartphone?" At first, I didn't see why I would need a tablet. But after observing quite a few PCWorld editors using them around the office, I relented and picked up an iPad last summer. Initially I had purchased the device to browse my massive library of digital comic books, but soon I found it useful for other, more-practical tasks. I started taking the iPad to meetings and using it to do quick Web searches, and it became my preferred way to read and respond to e-mail.
With the Motorola Xoom and other Honeycomb-powered tablets in the works, and with HP announcing its WebOS-based TouchPad, consumers will have a much bigger pool of devices to choose from. Although a tablet may not totally replace your PC anytime soon, using one has its benefits. Here are my top five.

ASUS Maximus II Gene Motherboard

While a lot of the focus on computer motherboards has legitimately been on the X58 chipset and the Core i7 CPUs due to the increased performance and new features of the combination, there is still a market for P45 based motherboards and Core 2 CPUs. After all, the platform cost for a X58+Core i7+ DDR3 memory is far less than buying a P45 based motherboard+ Core 2 CPU+ DDR2 memory. With the economy the way it is value is becoming more and more important.

When someone asks what's the latest chipsets? You hear two or three answers referring to the Intel 965X or 975X, and NVidia 680i. As of right now, there are more of the Intel based motherboards than the NVidia on the market. That is changing pretty quickly as various release issues have been vanishing with new BIOS updates. Each platform has had its hurdles, especially when it comes to the built in features.

P5E3 Deluxe Motherboard Review

ASUS R.O.G. Pinot Noir Motherboard

What's uncommon about this motherboard is the unique water cooling solution for its major components. Furthermore this board can work with the latest Intel 45nm CPUs and utilize 4x DDR3 modules, three PCI-E 2.0 x16 slots and six SATA 3.0 Gbps connectors.




Intel D975XBX (i975X) Motherboard

The uber HOT FedEx lady just dropped off the latest Intel D975XBX motherboard and I snapped a few pictures of it. This motherboard is using the Intel 975X Chipset and comes with three, yes three, PCI Express slots on the board.

Papers with the board explain that it has 2 PCI Express controllers in the MCH to enable either 1 x 16 or 2 x 8 operation for the 16 PCI Express lanes. In addition to multiple thread support, the Intel 975X Express Chipset enables key performance-optimized capabilities such as support for multiple 2x8 graphics cards, Intel Memory Pipeline Technology (Intel MPT), 8GB memory addressability to enable 64-bit computing, and ECC memory support.

Could ultraportables help bring back Windows


Pocketables.net reports that Taiwan's Compal is bringing out an ultramobile (above), which doesn't look that bad, but the report is headed Compal UMD sadly runs Windows CE 5.0.
It's not the only example of a new CE machine. The same site has a story headed Clearview XL43 calls itself world's smallest, most versatile UMPC, which also runs Windows CE, and there's the similar Cowon Q5.
